Soaring Success: Bald Eagle Population Has Quadrupled Since 2009
Bald eagles, once on the endangered species list, are now thriving.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a new report that bald eagles have quadrupled in numbers since 2009. One official called it, “a truly historic conservation success story.”
“We estimated 316,700 bald eagles were present in the four EMU’s in the 2019 breeding season, 4.4 times more eagles than in 2009. This indicates the bald eagle population has continued to increase rapidly since our previous survey,” the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shared in a recent report.
The bald eagle population had severely declined between 1870 and 1970 because of hunting, habitat loss, and the use of DDT (a powerful insecticide).
Bald Eagles are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
