The Tokyo Summer Olympics that were originally scheduled for 2020 and now are slated for this summer are still a go according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) despite rumors saying the Olympics Games are in danger of cancelation.

The IOC issued a statement to CNN which reads, “Some news reports circulating today are claiming that the government of Japan has privately concluded that the Tokyo Olympics will have to be canceled because of the coronavirus. This is categorically untrue … All parties involved are working together to prepare for a successful Games this summer.”

In a separate statement, local Tokyo organizers said, “All our delivery partners including the national government, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, the IOC and the IPC are fully focused on hosting the Games this summer. We hope that daily life can return to normal as soon as possible, and we will continue to make every effort to prepare for a safe and secure Games.”

Time will tell whether or not the Tokyo Summer Olympics will happen, but back in April 2020, Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori said in a new interview if the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games can’t take place in 2021, “It will be canceled then. The Olympics were canceled in the past for problems like war. We are fighting against an invisible enemy now…The Olympics would be much more valuable than any Olympics in the past if we could go ahead with them after winning this battle. We have to believe this otherwise our hard work and efforts will not be rewarded.”
