RAT Rock News

For those hoping the film adaptation of the American Idiot stage musical would be happening sooner than later, Green Day has some unfortunate news for you.

In a new interview with NME, Billie Joe Armstrong said the plans for the film have been “pretty much scrapped.” No additional details were offered as to why the film didn’t pan out, but considering the project had ties to HBO back in 2016, it’s certainly a bummer that production couldn’t get off the ground.

The American Idiot stage musical debuted in Berkeley, Calif. in 2009 before heading to Broadway in 2010 where it went on to be nominated for Best Musical at the Tony Awards that same year. The following year, the Broadway cast’s recording won the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. The show has had a number of tours all over the world, including London’s West End in 2015-16.
