Instagram is regulating selfies by removed all filters that give the appearance of plastic surgery. Sparks AR, Facebook’s platform for augmented reality, recently released a statement about their new policy. They explain that they will remove all filters associated with plastic surgery, postpone the approval of any new effects associated with plastic surgery, and continue to remove policy-violating effects as they see them.

As Allure points out, this includes filters that drastically make lips larger, create different nose shapes, and contour cheekbones. They say, “whether you’re aware of it or not, those types of filters can create a significant disconnect between your brain and your body image.” They also add that there is a doctor’s coined term called “Snapchat Dysmorphia.” This is where young patients get medical procedures to look like the filtered versions of themselves.
