For the New Year, I Choose to Give Blood
My New Year’s resolution will be to give blood at least three times throughout 2018.
The need is staggering: every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. Blood is needed every single day for routine reasons; not just for accidents and trauma. Those who receive the most blood are undergoing treatment for cancer, having surgeries, or being treated for inherited blood disorders, like sickle cell anemia. Blood is used to treat blood loss after childbirth. I’m one of the fortunate donors since I know that my blood is free of a common antibody, that I can give blood to save the lives of sick newborns.
Central Jersey Blood Center (CJBC) has been serving New Jersey residents for over 50 years. We have a hugely dedicated staff, and our three centers are a caring, vital part of Monmouth and Ocean County community. When blood is needed in our area, we are there to help. We care about caring—our centers have a small-town feel and are located in Toms River, Shrewsbury and Howell.
Did you know that when you donate blood at CJBC, the blood can be used throughout the whole state? That’s because CJBC believes in helping not just our immediate community, but also our neighbors in the larger sense: we are the only community-based nonprofit blood collection and distribution organization in New Jersey that serves hospitals and people throughout the State. CJBC considers the bigger picture.
Giving blood usually takes under an hour from the time you arrive until the time you leave (and only 10 minutes for the actual collection). Just one blood donation can save the lives of up to three people.
As good citizens and good neighbors, we need to be there for one another. When you donate to CJBC, you help not just our own community, but a grandfather in Trenton with cancer…or someone in Morristown having an organ transplant…or a woman in Atlantic City who has just had her first baby.
A New Year’s Resolution
Being able to help others is a powerful feeling, and I am glad to know that CJBC is there to assist me in helping others. I’m pledging to donate blood at least three times in the coming year, because it feels good to know that I am helping to save lives. I want to know that my blood is there to help in case of an accident, or in case it is needed in a routine procedure, just like if I needed blood, I hope it would be there for me.
My choice to give blood could mean the difference between someone’s life or death. My choice to give blood matters, both to the person receiving the blood, and to that person’s loved ones. My choice to give blood helps my neighbors and strengthens my community, both in my immediate neighborhood and within greater New Jersey.
You can to do the same. The New Year can literally be life-changing. Pledge to save lives by donating blood at least once in 2018.
