English actor John Hurt, whose career spanned over six decades and included two Academy Award nominations and roles in the Harry Potter film series and Doctor Who TV series, has passed away at the age of 77 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Hurt’s stellar career featured an incredibly diverse set of roles from Kane in 1979’s Alien to Control to 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to Adam Sutler in 2005’s V for Vendetta. His two Oscar nominations came from his role of Max in 1978’s Midnight Express and as John Merrick in 1980’s The Elephant Man.
However, his most beloved roles came with his turn as The War Doctor in the Doctor Who TV series in 2013-14 and as Mr. Ollivander in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, 2010’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Many people from the entertainment community took to Twitter to express their condolences to the late Hurt once the news of his passing was made public.

John Hurt passed away at 77 today, yet he made (at least) five more films that aren't even out yet. I think that says a lot about the man.
So sad to hear John Hurt has passed away. Merlin, Potter, Who, Indiana...the man spanned so much of what has and will always inspire me. RIP

John Hurt was the center of the best scene in Alien, and then was cool enough to parody it in Spaceballs. #RIP
God speed to John Hurt, a legendary actor and good human being.
